Course selection
Together, we will create an academic course plan based on the projected class offerings that prepares you to meet your program educational goals. We will also help create an academic course plan based on your intended program completion goals.
It is important to seek advice about course selection because some academic coursesnew window are not available every semester or may not be available at all NLC locations. Our team of dedicated staff can help you incorporate these exceptions into your planning
Program planning
The program advising team uses the approved program completion guides to help you see which requirements are needed to graduate from your programnew window.
Check in with a program advisor to ensure that you are on track to graduate.
Transfer credit guidance
Have you successfully completed courses at an accredited post-secondary institution?

Prerequisite waivers
A prerequisitenew window is a requirement that must be met before you take a course. If you do not have the prerequisite course but can demonstrate that you possess the equivalent knowledge or experience required by the prerequisite course connect with us as we are happy to discuss your options! Please note that prerequisite waivers are not guaranteed.
Waitlists
Waitlists for courses do occur, and you may wish to look for other course options. A program advisor can help you asses those options to find an alternative to a waitlist course. They can also support you by submitting a waitlist exception to the Dean in these three specific circumstances.
- You are in your final semester and the course is REQUIRED to graduate.
- It is a REQUIRED course in your program AND it is needed as a pre-requisite for another course AND not available in a future semester based on your anticipated program completion date.
- The course is available on a limited basis
Academic monitoring course planning
Our Academic Monitoring policyPDFnew window is in place to support your success. If you received notification that you are on academic monitoring, please follow the directions in the letter received by the Registrars Office. Program Advisors can support students on Academic Monitoring in their course adjustments for the semester. We may also receive referrals from Learning Support or a Program chair.
Program changes
From time to time a student starts at NLC in one program and determines they would like to change their programnew window. If this is you, please complete and submit a request to change program form available at campus services or studenthelp@nlc.bc.caemail. If you are an international student, please reach out to info@international.nlc.bc.caemail before submitting a program change request. Program advisors are available to provide program planning grids for you to compare your current NLC program to your desired NLC program.
Course challenges and PLAR
A course challenge could be an option for a learner who can demonstrate mastery of course objective and would like to receive credit without taking the course. Course Challenges are available to all learners at the College unless curriculum is regulated by an outside agency. Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is an assessment process by which individuals who have acquired learning through formal and non-formal education can be assessed for credit toward and educational program at NLC. Program advisors can provide guidance on the internal processes for students who require a course challengenew window request and prior learning assessmentnew window.
