Here’s how we can help you
Course selection
Together, we will create an academic course plan (based on the projected class offerings) that will prepare you to meet your program goals, as well as your intended program completion goals.
It is important to seek advice about course selection, as some academic courses are not available every semester or at all NLC locations. Our team of dedicated staff can help you incorporate these exceptions into your planning.
Program planning
The program advising team uses the approved program completion guides to help you see which requirements are needed to graduate from your program.
Check in with a program advisor to ensure that you are on track to graduate.
Transfer credit guidance
Have you successfully completed courses at an accredited post-secondary institution?
Curious if they might apply to your current NLC program?
Connect with a program advisor to learn more. You may be eligible to apply for transfer credit.
Prerequisite waivers
A prerequisite is a requirement that must be met before you take a course. If you do not have the prerequisite course, but can demonstrate that you possess the equivalent knowledge or experience required by the prerequisite course, connect with us — we are happy to discuss your options! Please note that prerequisite waivers are not guaranteed.
Waitlists
Waitlists for courses do occur, and you may wish to look for other course options. As program advisors, we can help you assess your options to find an alternative to a waitlisted course. We can also support you by submitting a waitlist exception to the Dean in the following three specific circumstances.
- You are in your final semester and the course is required to graduate.
- It is a required course in your program, and it is needed as a prerequisite for another course and not available in a future semester within your anticipated program completion time.
- The course is available on a limited basis.
To learn more go to the waitlist section of our registration regulations page.
Academic monitoring course planning
Our Academic Monitoring policy is in place to support your success. If you received notification that you are on academic monitoring, please follow the directions in the email sent from the Registrars Office. Program Advisors can support students on Academic Monitoring in their course adjustments for the semester. We may also receive referrals from Learning Support or a Program chair.
Program changes
From time to time, a student starts at NLC in one program, then decides they would like to change their program. If this is you, please complete and submit a program change request form (available at Campus Services or studenthelp@nlc.bc.ca). If you are an international student, please reach out to students@international.nlc.bc.ca before submitting a program change request. Program advisors are available to provide program planning grids for you to compare your current NLC program to your desired NLC program.
Course challenges and PLAR
A course challenge could be an option for a student who can demonstrate mastery of course objectives and would like to receive credit without taking the course. Course Challenges are available to all students at NLC unless the curriculum is regulated by an outside agency. Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is an assessment process where individuals who have learned through formal and informal education can be assessed for credit toward a program at NLC. Program advisors can provide guidance on the internal processes for students who need a course challenge request as well as a prior learning assessment.
Course Substitutions & Letters of Permission
There are instances where a student may inquire about and/or pursue a course at another institution to transfer back to their NLC program. This process requires a formal request for approval called a Letter of Permission and must be supported with legitimate reasoning.
In some cases, due to exceptional/extraordinary circumstances course substitutions may be considered by the program chair or dean in lieu of a Letter of Permission (LOP). Both processes are initiated through NLC’s program advisors.
Dual Credit Academic Course Planning
If you have been accepted to NLC as an academic Dual Credit student, we invite you to schedule an appointment with a program advisor prior to course registration. Let’s get you started on the right track!
