Pre-Employment Workplace Essential Skills Certificate

The Pre-Employment Workplace Essential Skills program offers pre-vocational training for youth and adults. The program includes the Test of Workplace Essential Skills (TOWES) to assess the student’s essential skill level and a variety of learning  opportunities designed to increase literacy, employability and essential skill levels of people preparing to enter the workforce


Career Prospects

Graduates exit the program with qualifications for entry-level positions in a variety of fields. In addition, graduates from the program have training in the nine essential skills to meet the requirement level of the Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) National Occupational Classification and the Conference Board of Canada Essential Skills

Admission Requirements

  • 17 years of age (or have a special arrangement with the School District(s) and/or Instructor); and
  • minimum working literacy level of Grade 5.

Important Notes

  1. The program is not eligible for Canada Student Loans.
  2. The program is affiliated with Bow Valley College.

Program Requirements

Residency RequirementNormally, all courses must be completed at Northern Lights College, howeer course transfer requests may be considered on a case by case basis.
Minimum Grade RequirementsCourses are graded as Pass or Fail:
•50% minimum for WPES 002 – Literacy
•50% minimum for WPES 003 – Numeracy
•50% minimum for WPES 004 – Workplace Communications
•60% minimum for WPES 005 – Employment Training
•50% minimum for WPES 007 – Professionalism in the Workplace 

*Please note the following semester break down is based on a student beginning their program in the Fall semester.  Students starting in other semesters should consult with the course catalogue in Borealis and with a Program Advisor when selecting courses.

All of:

  • WPES 002 – Literacy (42 contact hours)
  • WPES 003 – Numeracy (39.5 contact hours)
  • WPES 004 – Workplace Communications (40 contact hours)
  • WPES 005 – Employment Training (120 contact hours)
  • WPES 007 – Professionalism in the Workplace (30 contact hours)

Students may also choose one or more of the following optional Workforce Training courses, depending on the occupation associated with their work experience course:

  • WFTR 101 – First Aid Level 1
  • WFTR 107 – Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
  • WFTR 108 – H2S Alive
  • WFTR 119 – Traffic Control Person
  • WFTR 140 – FoodSafe Level I
  • WFTR 302 – Petroleum Safety Training
  • WFTR 800 – General Oilfield Driver Improvement
